Investing in Culture for Community Development
Culture plays a key role in the development of communities. In Syria, many local communities are rich with cultural resources which are not recognised or exploited. These resources include all practical, physical and intellectual human activity, not simply intellectual products such as art, literature and music. Rawafed works to emphasise these assets and resources through the development of a cultural map which both identifies current initiatives, but also highlights key areas both in terms of location and types of initiatives for possible future cultural development.
Following this key preliminary stage, Rawafed works with selected local cultural projects, providing support for them in areas including training, legal support, funding and marketing. This support is designed to enable individuals and the local community to benefit directly from their cultural assets, and stimulate interest in and capacities for further independent local development initiatives.
At all stages Rawafed builds strong and lasting partnerships with both the public and private sector and advocates for integrating cultural considerations into local and national policy planning. It works closely with local communities to ensure that culture is seen as a key area of investment and plays an important role in the socio-economic development of Syria.
